Arnold left home aged 12 in prior to join Dynamo Dresden's academy and moved to VfL Wolfsburg only three years later. He took part of the U19 squad, helping the club to win two youth titles (2009 and 2011).〔(Ten Things about Maximilian Arnold ); Bundesliga, 12 February 2014〕
On 26 November 2011 Arnold made his first-team debut, coming on as a late substitute in a 0–2 loss at FC Augsburg,〔(Brinkmann öffnet den Weg zum ersten Heimsieg (Brinkmann opens the way to first home win) ); Kicker, 26 November 2011 〕 becoming the youngest player to feature for Wolfsburg's first team with 17 years, five months and 30 days of age.
